This is one of the Bridgwater Circle series of paintings. The photo was taken at 13 Dampiet Street, part of the entrance portico to the Unitarian chapel. This historic church was founded in 1662 and preached in by the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The painting depicts the side of one of the pair of carved stone corbels keeping up the portico over the entrance to the chapel in Bridgwater, Somerset.
I was taken with the excellent stone carving, not so stiff and formal as one might expect, but a lovely organic plant form with swirling light and subtle shadows cast by the telephone exchange opposite. They serve to highlight the sweeping forms and delicacy of touch of the stonemason’s hands who carved this ornamentation and its partner. What a masterpiece.
